I did not choose this book. It was gifted to me by a co-worker as a Christmas
present. The note inside reads, “I heard this author being interviewed recently. I thought
about your new venture and hope that this #4 NY Times Best Seller has a few motivating or
helpful tips for you. If so, you can jot them down in the journals.” Very thoughtful gift(s),
right?
Rachel is a bit gritty and a little ratchet. “I don’t give a tinker’s damn,” a line she
borrowed from a historical romance novel, made me judge her less. I liked that she read the
same kinds of books I wanted to read. Part 1: Excuses to let go of– right away, she’s in your
business, telling you about yourself. But! She gives you best friend, favorite auntie vibes.
You’ll shake your head, roll your eyes, wave her away and in the end, laugh like a hyena.
You’ll know from the first sentence that she speaks from walking the walk. She shares
her pitfalls and victories. She systematically reminds us that women do not have to ebb and
flow within the confines and borders of familia expectations of what women should or
should not do. She reminds us not to feel guilty for dreaming beyond stereotypical roles to
fulfill someone else’s expectations. “Our potential–the potential that resides in every single
one of us—is our gift from the creator.” Rachel gets five out of five emoji hearts.
